Halloween Spirits
October 31st is a night of magic, ghosts, spirits and witchcraft. It is the night when the veil between the physical world and the realm of spirits and magic is very thin. It is said beings from one realm can cross into the other. The Wild Hunt rides on Halloween. The Wild Hunt is also referred to as the parade of spirits. These spirits can be good or bad; friend or fiend. The Fairy Host may be seen on this night also. The Fairy Host likes to play tricks on humans. So beware of small strange looking beings wandering around on this night. They will often accept a sweet to leave you alone.
Masks
Masks are often worn on Halloween. Masks have a long and varied history. Masks have been used in magic, to cover the face of the dead, in religious ceremonies and to deflect fiendish spirits and of course, masks are very popular at Carnival.
Food for Halloween
Apples are a traditional food to eat at Samhain. Something sweet should be eaten to honor the dead. Colcannon is an Irish Halloween meal. It is made with potatoes, cabbage and onions. It is an Irish mashed potato with chopped cabbage and onions mixed together.
Magic of Halloween
All Hallows is a prime time to have readings and do physic work. An old tradition to find your true love is to peel an apple in one long peel. Then drop the peel and it will form the first letter of your true loves' first name. You get only one try at peeling the apple, if the peel breaks, throw the peel over your left shoulder to prevent bad luck and try again next year.
Crossroads have long been a magical place. On Halloween go to a crossroads a few minutes before midnight and ask for a divination. The first words you hear after midnight will become your oracle for the next year. The words can come from a person, a radio in a passing car or over a loud speaker. No matter where the words come from, listen carefully.
Happy Halloween!
