An Earth Day Story

This month I'm going to do something I've not done before in the newsletter. I will tell you something about myself that is a very meaningful part of my life. As all important things are told, I'll start it as a story.

Once upon a time there was a baby girl born in a city of tall buildings, paved streets and hustle and bustle. She grew to a little girl who loved the city and learned to shop in the stores and where to get a chocolate milk shake. Unknown to the little girl, her parents were not happy and while they worked out their problems they took the little girl to her grandparents in the county. Now this was all new to the little girl, there were no sidewalks to follow, no street signs to tell her where she was, only trees and more trees, grass, weeds, bushes and flowers. Green, so much green everywhere. So many shades of green. Small animals and even snakes crossed her path when she ventured out for a stroll, often sending her running back to the safety of the house. She decided she would stay in the house and read by the window. This is what she did for many days, but now and then she would put down her book and gaze at the birds flying from tree to tree or the flowers nodding in the breeze and the fragrance of the earth would drift in the window. After a time she took her book and sat by the flowers. She didn't really read much, she was too busy watching the bees and humming birds scattered among the flowers. Soon she was walking in the woods, very quietly so she could glimpse a rabbit or squirrel. One day she even climbed a tree, after many falls and slips, and leaned her body against the rough bark and felt she was a part of the woods.

One day her parents came and hugged her. The next day they took her on a trip to an even bigger city than the one she had known before the woods. This is your new home they told her. At first she missed the trees and the quiet, but there was a new city to explore. She grew to a young woman in this city and as soon as her schooling was finished she moved to an even bigger city, in fact one of the biggest of all cities. There were times she longed for green and spent the day in the park. In the big city she worked, fell in love and married. She and her love moved to the suburbs and lived in a little house with a back yard where three trees shaded the house and raised a family. In time she turned her little back yard into a haven for birds, a couple of rabbits and many squirrels. She often leaned against the rough bark of the biggest tree and the world seemed to become hushed and she could almost hear the sap running up and down the tree.

Now a mature woman, she had spent many years studying the Earth and loving the Earth and all growing and living things upon it and the wonders inside the Earth. The children were grown and had left for the big city. She and her love finally moved to the woods not far from where her grandparents had lived. They lived on a mountain with so many trees, she didn't even know then all. Animals visited, birds made their home in the trees and she grew flowers. Nasturtium blossoms fell over each other competing for the sunshine all around her house. She loved the Earth more each day. When she left her mountain top and saw the disrespect the Earth had to submit to, the trash carelessly thrown at the road side, the land bulldozed for more buildings leaving no trees. Each visit to the town where she and her love purchased the food they couldn't grow themselves, she saw more and more cars and trucks. Most of the vehicles had only the driver in them. She was always relived to be back on the mountain and talk to the trees and tell the Earth how much she loved and respected it.

. Earth Day has a very special meaning to the woman, who as you know, I am that woman. The Earth has given me food, shelter and her beautiful gems that I love and have studied for so many years. The Earth has given me an abundance of riches. All the Earth is my home, as it is your home. Please love and respect Earth. An Abundance of Riches can be yours also. I hope you will love green as much as I.
