Summer Solstice

Holidays for June are Flag Day, Father's Day and Summer Solstice, the beginning of summer. Solstice means "sun stands still". Watch the sun for a few days before and after the solstice and it will seem that it doesn't move. In the Northern Hemisphere the sun gets very high in the sky and remains above the horizon for more than twelve hours on the solstice. In the Southern Hemisphere it is the Winter Solstice.

June Weddings

The biggest celebration in June is the Wedding. June is named for the Roman goddess Juno, who blessed marriage and childbirth. The June moon is the Mead Moon or Honey Moon. Mead is a drink made with honey. In 2008 the full moon is on the 18th, so the Summer Solstice night, which is on June 20th at 7:59 EDT, will be a bright and beautiful night. This is a perfect night for a wedding. Many ancient cultures performed weddings on the night of the Summer Solstice. Maybe they weren't weddings as we think of them today, but it was a night of fertility blessings.

Blessed Marriage

Herbs can be harvested this month. You can give a special blessing to any wedding with some herbs in the bride's bouquet. Some herbs to include are rosemary, lavender, yarrow, thyme or some ivy to proclaim that you will be faithful to one another. An incredibly blessed marriage would be to have it under an oak tree with pots of herbs positioned among the guests on Summer Solstice night.

Magic Love

If you are already married, June is a time to re-new your love and to remember when you were young lovers. Summer Solstice night is an enchanted time for everyone, if you will only allow the magic into your love.
