The Windy Month
Weather-wise March can bring a blizzard or the sweet smell of Spring. Either way it is almost always a windy month. March was named after the Roman god of war Mars, and at times you have to battle the strong winds. March winds have always had a magical quality to them. The ancients believe the March winds carried their wishes to heaven. Sudden blustery winds or teasing breezes are a part of March. March winds bring a promise of a new season and a fresh start, blowing the past away. This is also a good time to get rid of the dark Winter mood in the house. Open the windows on a windy day and let the air blow around the house. Allow the fresh chi to enter the home. March winds bring a new start. If March comes in like a lion and goes out like a lamb or the opposite, we know spring is almost here and winter will soon be banished.
EasterEaster falls on the first Sunday after the full moon that is after the Spring Equinox. The word Easter may come from Eostre, the Saxon's Great Mother Goddess. In the Roman calendar Spring was the beginning of the year. This was the time of new beginnings and getting rid of the old. The wearing new hats and clothes on Easter is a symbol of renewal. Eggs are a symbol of spring and fertility. Eggs painted red were a symbol of fertility and new life.
Saint Patrick
St Patrick is associated with Ireland, but he was born in Scotland and was probably a Roman citizen. Patrick was capture by Irish raiders and was a slave in Ireland for several years. He had a spiritual conversion and escaped Ireland, studied in Gaul and Italy, then went on to take holy orders. When Patrick was a bishop at the about sixty years of age, he returned to Ireland to preach. He lived the rest of his life in Ireland. It is said he drove all the snakes from Ireland. The shamrock, which is now associated with St Patrick, was once the symbol of the three aspects of the Great Goddess, maiden, mother and crone.
Most of us wear a little green in the middle of the month to celebrate St. Patrick's Day. We may eat some corned beef and cabbage and drink a brew or two. We have the desire to have a party and say good-bye to winter.
