Pendulum History

A pendulum is basically a weight attached to a string. The use of the pendulum is very old. Apparently one of the first recorded uses of the pendulum, in China, was about a device that would sway after an earthquake some distance away. The pendulum would hit a ball that would fall out of a urn into a metal toad's mouth. This would signify the cardinal direction of where the earthquake was located.

Galileo used a pendulum in many of his studies. He may be first person to suggest that a pendulum could be used to tell time. Pendulum clocks are still very popular today. Galileo probably introduced the metronome to help musicians. The metronome wasn't widely used until Ludwig van Beethoven started marking his compositions with metronome markings.

Isaac Newton was able to form "Newton's law of universal gravitation", with the use of a pendulum. A pendulum assisted him in being able to analyze the orbital motions of the planets.

The pendulum moves by the force of gravity. The sway of the pendulum may be faster or slower depending on the location on the earth of its use. It will be faster in Paris than in French Guiana. Gravity is lower in French Guiana.

Pendulum Use

The simplest pendulum is the bob pendulum, a weight on a string. The Foucault pendulum has a weight on long wire that can swing in any direction. This pendulum was what Jean-Bernard-Leon Foucault use to demonstrate the earth's rotation. The pendulum is mostly used in clocks today. Pendulums are used for dowsing (finding water and minerals), adjusting chakras, healing, testing food for compatibility with your system, finding lost objects and people, and answering questions.

Pendulums can be made from crystal, gemstones, wood, ceramics, brass, gold, silver or just about anything. They can be round, teardrop, spiral or just about any shape. Whatever type of pendulum you have it should be your personal pendulum. It doesn't matter if you use your pendulum for fun or for serious work, you shouldn't let other people use your pendulum and you must take proper care of it.
