February

February can have the cruelest winter storms in the Northern Hemisphere, but it is the shortest month of the year. The ground hog has seen his shadow more times than not on February second. The second of February is also Imbolc, a day of purification. On the Christian calendar the 2nd of February is Candlemas Day. This is a good day to perform rituals of protection and blessings. We welcome the return of the Sun on that day and the days are getting longer.

Mardi Gras

Mardi Gras brings parties and festivities to February which is all part of celebrating the end of the dark and the return of the sun.

Valentine's Day

February 14th is Valentine's Day. A day of flowers, candy and a candle lit dinner. It is not surprising that the Greek deities Eros and Aphrodite are associated with this month, also the Celtic goddess Brigid.

Great Men

We also celebrate the birth of two great presidents, Abraham Lincoln and George Washington on Presidents' Day.

Full Moon

February's full moon is the Snow Moon or Chaste Moon. It is said that the fairies dance under this moon to woo the flowers to bloom. Violets and primrose are believed to contain fairy magic. 2012 is a leap year with an extra day in February, always a more magical year.

Stones

Aquarius ends in February and Pisces begins. The best known stone for February is amethyst. Other stones strongly connected to this month are moonstone and bloodstone. The colors for February are pastel blues and greens with white.
